SOUTH KOREAN STUDENTS DECLARATION

Preparatory Committee of the Students Committee of the Youth and Students’ Solidarity

for Realizing the June 15 Joint Declaration Issued Appeal

On July 9 the Preparatory Committee of the Students Committee of the Youth and Students’ Solidarity for Realizing the June 15 Joint Declaration made public an appeal under the title “Let the youth and students spark the popular resistance against Lee Myung-bak and the dictatorship with an extraordinary resolve”.

Noting that the vigorous struggle to oust the Lee dictatorial force is vigorously underway across south Korea, the appeal condemned the Lee Myung-bak ruling force driven to a severe ruling crisis for totally negating the June 15 joint declaration and the October 4 declaration, the wholesale suppression and roundup against the pro-reunification movement organizations and getting more pronounced in anti-north Korean confrontation moves.

It called for overthrowing the dictatorial force through the mass resistance under the banner of the anti-Lee Myung-bak and anti-dictatorship. The appeal went on to say;

Ousting the Lee regime is the only way out to revive the infringed democracy, collapsed inter-Korean relations and impoverished economy.

The youth and students should be pacesetters in the struggle to topple down the Lee regime.

Let’s pool all efforts to oust the Lee regime with extraordinary determination.

Ever-growing Campaign to Issue Declarations on Situation

In general the intellectuals are called a representative of justice and truth, and a mirror of conscience in the society.

It is because they have the ability to correctly discern the essence and phenomena of the society with profound knowledge, and the career feature dealing with the science of clarifying the universal principles.

Historically in south Korea, whenever democracy was mercilessly violated and the people's right to existence was badly infringed upon by the rulers’ misrule the conscientious intellectuals conducted the campaign of issuing declarations on the situation in a bid to disclose the unjust policy of the regime and demand its repeal.

At present the drive to publish declarations on the situation started by the progressive professors and students of universities is widely spreading among the media, religion, arts and labor movement fields.

On June 26 some 4 420 unionists under the Union of Democratic Alliance, 1 037 artists including drama directors, actors, actresses and dramatists, and on July 9 more than 600 singers published declarations on the situation to bitterly denounce indiscriminate security-oriented rule and the anti-north Korean confrontation moves of the regime.

Holding that all the tragedies in south Korea now are the inevitable results of the dictatorial rule which threatens, suppresses the people and lords it over them, the declarations expressed their volition to actively struggle to realize democracy and defend the right to existence.

The National Missionary Association of the University Professors and the National Council of Representatives of Education Universities also took part in the campaign in denunciation of the anti-popular educational policy of the Lee clique. They declared that after the advent of the Lee regime the democracy of the society is ruthlessly trampled down and the rights of speech, press, meeting and assembly are mercilessly violated, and called for terminating the dictatorial rule by the united efforts of the people without fail.

South Korean and foreign professors in European universities including London University made public declarations on the situation on June 19 and sharply condemned all the criminal acts of the south Korean government including the violation of the freedom of speech, idea and expression.

The campaign of issuing declarations on the situation ever-growing in south Korea will be further intensified to a struggle of overthrowing the Lee Myung-bak regime which sold out the dignity and interests of the nation to outside forces, drove the inter-Korean relations to a catastrophe, destroyed democracy and devastated the people's living through the fascist dictatorship and anti-people misrule.
