AN AWKWARD TRICK
Awkward Trick
Assistant to assemblyman Choi Gu-sik from the Grand National Party dared hacking on the homepage of the Central Election Management Committee and that of Park Weon-sun, a candidate for Seoul mayor, during the mayoral election on October 26, arousing a big criticism. The recent incident is that the above-said assistant committed a DDos (distributed denial of service) attack that produces the high-capacity traffics of 263 mega-bytes per second on the election day (October 26) in conspiracy with IT specialists by mobilizing some 1,500 zombie PCs. As a result, they paralyzed the targeted homepages for two hours so as to prevent the voters from knowing their polling places and the turnouts, enormously hampering the people's participation in the election. In history of south Korean election, high voting rate gave advantage to the opposition parties and low voting rate to the ruling party. Since the youth, students, salary men in their 20s and 30s, in particular, have the progressive inclination, their antipathy to the GNP and other conservative forces is very strong. Though the GNP group resorted to the huge authority power, financial resources, organizations and negative propaganda, and not content with that, even committed the cyber-attack in a bid to hamper the voting of the young people, it suffered a fiasco in the Seoul mayoral election in the end. With the latest hacking incident the political situation is plunged into an irretrievable vortex and the public branded it as a “Watergate of south Korean version” and bitterly denounces the GNP. The completely abstracted GNP is in disorder with internal division, hesitation and defection and its 3 highest members have already resigned in group. In the past, the GNP was stigmatized as a pro-US sycophantic party for selling off the national dignity and sovereignty, an anti-reunification party for stirring up the inter-Korean confrontation, a party of the rich and conglomerates, a party of garbage for committing all sorts of irregularities and corruption, a party of receiving money by trucks from big businesses and a party of lechers. With the recent scandal it was branded as a party of cyber-hacking. In last June Han Son-gyo, assemblyman from the GNP, eavesdropped with a KBS reporter on a closed-door meeting of the Democratic Party, triggering off the denunciation from the media and the public. The Democratic Party and other opposition parties and civic organizations termed the recent incident as terrorism aimed to lower the turnouts of the young salary men in favor of the GNP, and step up the anti-GNP struggle. The recent incident plainly disclosed the filthy nature of the GNP which dares conduct any base acts for its dirty political aims. And through the recent incident it was brought to light that the so-called hacking on the computing network of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation and other cyber-attacks were cooked up by certain south Korean elements including the GNP group to implicate the north in the incidents of the DDos attacks for further anti-north confrontational racket. It is since long that the public mindset has forsaken the GNP and it is too late to save the GNP precipitating to death.
